Corruption-Leadership Video Reflection Paper

Summary

For example, an organization may be required to follow too many rules and official procedures that take a lot of time to observe, hence creating a need to engage in corruption by violating the laws on the required procedure to boost economic growth and encourage more business activity. The speaker concludes by stating that whether corruption is good or bad depends on factors such as education levels, the rule of law, social inequality, and democracy.

Based on the information provided in the video, corruption may be a good thing for an organization, especially when it helps an organization bypass laws that could be hindering entrepreneurial activity. Global leaders are expected to understand laws that affect business activities and abide by them to avoid legal issues that could affect an organization’s reputation and increase operational costs due to legal fees and fines. Unfortunately, global leaders cannot avoid dealing with corruption due to the issue’s prevalence in most countries worldwide. The stiff competition in the global environment may be the leading cause of corruption. According to Santos et al. (2012), many corruption agents may be generous, pleasant, intelligent, and interesting while also having a destructive and parasitic impact. Therefore, leaders may be placed in positions where they have to choose whether corruption will benefit or destroy the organization.

The video is also connected to the course concept on the role of leadership in corruption. Leaders play a significant role in shaping organizational culture. Therefore, a leader may promote corruption by creating a corporate culture that supports corruption. Shuhaiber et al. (2019) argue that the main type of corruption linked to corporate culture is administrative corruption, characterized by embezzlement, bribery, and conspiracy. A lack of accountability and transparency represents weak organizational cultures, and the lack of a code of conduct prohibiting unethical practices encourages corruption (Shuhaiber et al., 2019). Therefore, leaders are responsible for setting policies, procedures, and codes of conduct that clearly define the organization’s stance on corruption. The video is also connected to the course content on the different types of corruption in organizations. The main causes mentioned in the course content and the video include embezzlement of resources and misuse of trusted authority. Global leaders face pressure from many stakeholders, including the government, thus pushing them to engage in unethical and corrupt practices such as the embezzlement of funds.

Reflection

One of the things I have learned from the video is that corruption may be a good thing as long as the underlying law is bad. For example, organizations may use corruption to sustain themselves when the laws regulating their operations create unfair competition. In business environments dominated by large government agencies or individuals linked to the government, there may be unfair regulations aimed at protecting the interests of the government agencies or the individuals linked to the government. This may prompt small businesses to pay bribes so that they can continue operating and generating profit. In such instances, corruption is good because it supports the sustainability of companies. The second thing I have learned from the video is that corruption is not only about offering bribes and embezzling resources but also about misusing authority. Many corruption cases focus on the embezzlement of funds, thus creating an impression that corruption is only about the misuse of funds. Therefore, other forms of corruption, such as nepotism and abuse of power and authority, are ignored despite their major impact on organizations and the business environment. The video demonstrates that it is important to view corruption from different dimensions to determine whether it is good or bad.
