One of the contributions made by the members of Hull House to better the welfare of children was providing daycare services, where children would receive proper care and interact with other children. The second contribution was establishing a juvenile court, which became the first juvenile court in the world. The Juvenile court building had a detention home where children waiting for placement by the court would stay, and later, a diagnostic clinic was established in the building. The third contribution was providing medical examination services to children. The Hull House built the Mary Crane Nursery and Health Care Center which provided dental and medical care for neighborhood children. After being admitted to Mary Crane, every child received a thorough medical examination by a qualified doctor and daily care provided by nurses.

How the Original Mission of the Children’s Aid Society Harmed Poor Children and Families

The Children’s Aid Society’s original mission was to enhance children’s emotional and physical well-being and give them the support needed to become successful adults. Nonetheless, this mission harmed poor children and families because it separated the poor children from their families. The emigration plan introduced by the Children’s Act Society resettled poor children with farm families in the West to rescue them from poverty and crime (Children’s Aid, 2023). Unfortunately, the poor children and families had no choice but to accept the emigration plan because they could not afford the lifestyle offered by farm families.

The Plight of the Indigenous Children Sent to Boarding Schools for Indigenous Children

The main characteristic of the Indian Boarding School was permanently breaking family ties and providing children with a substitute for their own families by placing them in good homes comprising white people (Newland, 2022). The children sent to the Indian Boarding School were likely to develop emotional issues and loneliness because they were sent to boarding schools far from their homes and were separated from their families at a young age, thus making them forget their parents. The children sent to the Indian Boarding School were also at a high risk of forgetting their culture because they grew up in an environment where they were assimilated into a foreign culture.
