Consumer Behavior – Dining Habits of Millennials

Consumer Behavior – Dining Habits of Millennials

Millennials are described as individuals born between 1981 and 1996. Based on the slide show, one of the dining habits of millennials is dining in large groups. Millennials often value spending time in social groups, thus developing a preference for dining out in large social groups. The second behavior is late-night eating or midnight eating. The third behavior is wanting to know the story behind the food, which significantly influences cooking shows and food networks. For instance, restaurants offering dining in-the-dark experiences include different types of food in the servings to create an adventurous experience for customers (CBS News, 2013). The story behind the food also influences habitual buying behavior because millennials develop a preference for food with a story they can relate to.

The fourth behavior is wanting an experience when eating out. The need for experience has resulted in a trend of dining in the dark. Dining in the dark gives people an adventurous experience because they have to use their taste buds to confirm what they are eating. The idea of dining in the dark can promote variety-seeking behavior as consumers try to experiment with their ability to identify different kinds of foods using their taste buds.

The Dining in the Dark videos demonstrated that millennials experiment with new dining experiences in large groups. This is evident in how they visit the dining in the dark restaurant as a crowd and exchange their opinions on what they are served to identify unique flavors. The videos also suggest that millennials look for unique aspects of the food they consume. For instance, one of the speakers in the video mentions that one of the things that motivated him to go for the dining-in-the-dark experience was wanting the food to feel unusual.
