Competencies Needed by HR Professionals
According to Harrison (2012), human resources are the most crucial part of an organization because their knowledge, skills, and capabilities can contribute to its failure or success. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that human resource management professionals have the competencies to positively impact employees’ performance. Conflict management skills are one of the competencies needed by HR professionals. Conflicts are common among employees, and if not properly managed, they may affect employee productivity. HR professionals should thus be able to effectively eliminate conflict among employees and conflicts between employees and management (Ulrich et al., 2017).
The second competency is communication skills. HR professionals must communicate the organization’s long-term goals and shared objectives to ensure that employees collaborate towards achieving a shared goal that positively impacts the organization’s performance (Suryanarayana, 2012). The third competency is cross-cultural awareness. Modern-day organizations embrace diversity as part of their corporate social responsibility and equality component, which is why HR professionals need to know how to deal with people from different cultures by learning their beliefs and practices.
Many organizations worldwide are considering human resource certification as one of the factors to consider when hiring candidates applying for a human resource manager position and other senior positions in the human resource management department. HR certification is important because it dictates an individual’s level of expertise, including training on the latest human resource management software and tools. The second reason is that it increases an individual’s salary potential because it increases competitive advantage in the job market. Finally, the third reason is that it creates more opportunities because an organization is willing to invest in the career development of an HR professional with certification to create job satisfaction and reduce turnover.
