Coca-Cola Discrimination Issues

Coca-Cola Discrimination Issues

A brief description of the scope and purpose identified in the needs analysis.

The Coca-Cola Company is one of the biggest beverage companies in the world. Its leadership and organizational culture are commendable since the company has grown to the extent of having branches worldwide. However, the company has been associated with discriminatory cases in the past, where employees and applicants complain about being treated unfairly or not given the same employment opportunities as others. Lisa Burden (2018) analyzed a case where Coca-Cola had to pay a $2.5 million fine for discriminating against people with disabilities. Judy Greenwald (2012) also reports a case where the company battled a discriminatory case. It is challenging for James Quincey, who is the chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of the company, to follow up with each applicant and employee, to ensure that they are fairly treated. He, instead, has managers who oversee selection and recruitment processes to ensure that every policy is observed.

The managers can be corrupt, which ends up tarnishing the company’s image. The main purpose of this project is to analyze the equal employment opportunity issues and affirmative action in the Coca-Cola company. It then recommends training to solve discriminatory issues faced by the company. It presents that managers in every sector need to be trained in maintaining good ethical standards and working efficiently to ensure that every applicant and employee is treated equally. The Human Resources (HR) personnel are responsible for selecting and hiring employees. This project recommends that skill-based training focuses on HR personnel to ensure that they are well-equipped with the skills and knowledge to conduct their responsibilities ethically.

An outline of your action plan.

An action plan provides a sense of direction and priorities towards achieving a goal. It also keeps an individual motivated to achieve the set goal or project. The following is an outline of my action plan:

The end goal.

By the end of the project, I should be able to discuss the history and instances of discrimination in Coca-Cola. I should also be able to explain why discriminatory acts occur regularly in the company and how to mitigate the habit. The goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. I should also be able to recommend to the company ways in which they will have affirmative action to curb discriminatory habits among the employees.

Steps to be followed.
  1. Choosing a topic
  2. Defining tasks
  3. Brainstorming
  4. Locating valuable sources
  5. Accessing materials
  6. Preparing preliminary works
  7. Finalizing thesis

All the above steps are critical to writing my project. I will ensure that the sources I use are credible and peer-reviewed.

Priorities and deadline.

Setting a deadline is an important factor in writing a project. I will ensure that I meet the assigned deadline by planning my work and all the activities involved. Planning will allow me to allocate enough time for each activity to ensure that I will not be late. Having a quality project is my ultimate priority. I will ensure that I research well and incorporate the relevant information in my project.

Resources needed.

The following are some of the resources I will use for this project.

  1. Information from the official Coca-Cola website
  2. Selmi, M. (2002). The price of discrimination: The nature of class action employment discrimination litigation and its effects.  L. Rev.81, 1249.
  3. Herring, C. (2002). is job discrimination dead? contexts1(2), 13-18.
  4. Holbrook, E. (2011). A decade of discrimination. Risk Management58(4), 18.
  5. Information from the official EEOC website

Identification of any unique organizational factors, including resources and barriers that could impact your project.

There might be both internal and external organizational factors that may affect the outcome of my project. Some of the factors include:

I will use the internet to access peer-reviewed content for my project. One of the major barriers to my project is inadequate information that I can use to justify my conclusions and recommendation about the company. Research is the systematic investigation into the sources and materials available and establishing a new conclusion about a given topic. Researchers might talk about the company but do not provide exact details about equal employment opportunities and affirmative action issues in Coca-Cola, which might affect the outcomes of my project.

Unverified information about the company.

With the technological advancements made over the years, anyone can access the internet and share or edit the information available. It is difficult to access verified information from the company, apart from the information available on its official websites. Companies can be selective about the information they give about themselves since they are concerned about their reputation. This limits the verified facts that can be used for this project.

Leadership theories and concepts that you will apply as part of your capstone.

As part of the project, I’ll apply the behavioural theory to assess the discrimination issues at Coca-Cola. Behavioural theory explains that responses to environmental stimuli can shape a person’s actions. I will use this to analyze why discriminatory acts occur in the organization and what should be done to avoid them. I will also use the “be, know, and do” leadership concepts to recommend the best training methods to mitigate discriminatory behaviours.
