Characteristics of a Good Leader

Characteristics of a Good Leader

Like in all other roles that a person can assume, for example, a parent, being a leader also has distinct characteristics that can determine whether one is a good or bad leader. Today, there are numerous individuals in leadership positions, but the lack of the traits of good leaders has destructive consequences, like in the recently convicted Elizabeth Holmes (Trautman et al., 2022). Among the numerous traits of a good leader, three core traits include being inspirational, collaborating with peers, and being committed.

Being Inspirational

To be inspirational, a leader has to provoke a deep sense of purpose or duty towards a certain goal from those they lead. An example of inspiration is intrinsic motivation (Hamid & Zohre 2017). For instance, during Obama’s election, millions of individuals volunteered for years in his campaign despite not being paid because they believed in him and his mission (McKenna & Han 2014). This is opposed to extrinsic motivation, whereby employees only work to be rewarded in some way.

Collaborating with Peers

Among the most recommended leadership styles, for example, transformational leadership mostly focuses on the relationships in an organization. Good relationships in organizations then bring about successful collaboration efforts. Effective leaders should be able to form good relationships with those they work with and those who work for them (Malloy et al., 2022). Besides, collaboration means that leaders can delegate responsibilities effectively. This leads to engagement and productivity in all areas of an organization. Besides, collaboration has a significant trickle-down impact that benefits all those involved.

Being Committed

Effective leaders are devoted to their mission, themselves, and those they lead. Besides, according to Singh and Rangnekar (2020), leaders must first show their commitment to an organization’s goal and their employees if they want the same commitment from those they lead. Malloy et al. (2022) also state that commitment leads to a trusting relationship between leaders and followers, creating an enjoyable environment.

Conclusion

In summation, among the many traits that make a good leader, there are three core traits. One is being inspirational, meaning a leader has to stimulate people to believe and work towards what the leaders intend to do. Secondly, a good leader must collaborate efficiently with peers and those who work for them. The only way that a company can succeed is when everyone in the company works together. As such, it is the role of the leader to ensure the environment is collaborative. Lastly, effective leaders are committed to their goals and employees, making decisions demonstrating this commitment to the organization’s success.
