Characteristics of a Good Leader

Characteristics of a Good Leader

In today’s world, many people in leadership positions lack the core characteristics of what a good leader requires. For example, many leaders today lack the commitment, ability to collaborate, and ability to inspire people. Nowadays, people need a solid leader to rely on and look for direction and answers. Accordingly, three core characteristics of good leaders include collaboration among peers, commitment, and inspiration.

Collaboration among Peers

Being a good leader requires one to be able to solicit cooperation among peers so that they can achieve a common goal. The main thing a leader can do is guide and help people, and that goes with being able to collaborate with peers. Notably, effective collaboration in a workplace is one of the signs of a positive team culture. The critical elements to creating a positive team culture mainly include the leader. Accordingly, a leader should be open to those who follow them and build trusting relationships so people can trust each other to complete work successfully (Malloy, Kavussanu & Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2022). Another element contributing to positive teamwork is when a leader provides opportunities to a team because it boosts a creative culture and collaboration. All these elements are the foundation of a collaborative work environment. As a result, a workplace displaying effective partnership is a good indication of having a good leader. Moreover, an effective leader promotes collaboration over competition, encouraging followers to always stand up for themselves. In addition, good leaders also make sure that practices and policies that support and protect their followers are implemented.

Commitment

Leaders must be committed to their team, themselves, and whatever they try to achieve together. Being a leader requires one to show commitment. For instance, commitment has been defined in sports as a “psychological construct representing the desire and resolve to continue sports participation” (Malloy, 2022). At the same time, enjoyment is “a positive affective response to the sports experience that reflects generalized feelings such as pleasure, liking, and fun” (Malloy, 2022). According to Singh and Rangnekar (2020), employees’ commitment to their leaders significantly influences how successful an organization can become. In addition, this kind of commitment must be stimulated, or instead, it is a response to the commitment from their leader. Committing as a leader will build trust, improve production, and positively impact the team. As a result, as trust in the authentic leader and team cohesion increase due to the more robust relationships between authentic leaders and their followers, higher commitment and enjoyment may result. (Malloy, 2022). In addition, this situation occurs when there is a leader and followers like a CEO and staff or a coach and a team. In addition, commitment in a leader means that they often take the initiative, are loyal to their followers, and demonstrate professionalism (Singh & Rangnekar, 2020). This kind of behavior from a leader then provokes followers to reciprocate the same values, a trait that makes one a good leader.

Being Inspirational

Leaders have to be able to inspire the people they lead, bring them to new heights, and make them post past their dreams or goals they have set. One demonstration of leadership inspiration is the intrinsic motivation among all employees (Hamid & Zohre 2017). Intrinsic motivation is the internal driving force of doing something because one enjoys and derives satisfaction from it. This is opposed to extrinsic motivation, whereby employees must be rewarded with bonuses or promotions to be satisfied and motivated. Accordingly, employees’ levels of creativity and innovation are ignited.

Further, followers are passionate about the goals of the company. Only an effective leader can inspire such feelings and actions from those they lead. This is in addition to having their followers believe in their dream and join them in making it come true.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are numerous traits of an effective leader, including being inspirational, being committed, and being able to rally cooperation among those being led. Accordingly, being emotional is about positively influencing other people so that they follow the leader to accomplish a specific goal. Secondly, an effective leader must be committed to their mission, vision, and goals. This commitment should be demonstrated in everything, for example, in their employees, goals, and positive work culture, to name a few. Finally, yet significantly, an effective leader can also rally cooperation from their followers and peers. This means that a leader can bring people together by creating a suitable environment for cooperation. For instance, a good leader recognizes the importance of diversity in collaboration and a healthy working environment and, most importantly, demonstrates their commitment before asking for this commitment from others.
