Subject: The Major Challenges Facing the Field of Homeland Security (HLS)

Greetings

Balancing our national security together with commercial needs has been a long-term issue to the Department of Homeland Security. Addressing these challenges squarely falls in the hands of the DHS and its border and transportation security agencies. As the security manager in DHS, we experience a myriad of challenges in border protection and transportation (Anderson, 2021). Some of the challenges include; first, scrutinizing the high trade volumes of goods entering the U.S. Our border security agencies are always overwhelmed with the task of screening all the products that are entering the country because there are millions of tons of goods entering and thus, the border security agencies have the responsibility of making sure that they detect illegal goods so that only legal goods enter the country (Anderson, 2021). Secondly, there is a challenge of the high rate of illegal immigrants on the southern border. The agency has the responsibility of blocking this illegal entry of immigrants. Other challenges are detecting false admissibility documents and providing timely intelligence to the field.

The DHS also faces more challenges when trying to protect critical infrastructure. One of the challenges that the security agency faces when protecting critical infrastructure is numerous external threats such as hacking (Govinfo.gov, 2003). Thus, the security agents use a lot of resources to put in place some counter-measures to secure the critical infrastructure. The second challenge I that threats from natural occurrences such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, fires, and more. When such natural disasters occur, the critical infrastructure area is at high risk and this could lead to the collapse of the system (Auerswald, et al., 2005). Standardization of the critical infrastructure to suit international infrastructure is another challenge to the DHS. The Increased connectivity of the critical infrastructure makes them more vulnerable to external risks thus, the DHS has the challenge o going the extra mile to safeguard the infrastructure from imminent attacks (Anderson, 2021). The fundamental problem of the first responders is that when the borders, transport, and critical infrastructure are not protected, there could be serious attacks from external thus making the whole process.
