Case Study- Cost-Cutting at Ventacare Nursing Home

Case Study- Cost-Cutting at Ventacare Nursing Home

Case Overview

The case study highlighted the plight of a nursing home experiencing funding shortfalls and the need to cut costs.  The human resources director, Allison Wiggan, is under pressure to meet operational business needs while reducing costs. Currently, Ventacare Nursing Home has sufficient employees for the customer base it serves and cannot terminate any of them as a cost-cutting measure. Ventacare Nursing Home’s management has also temporarily frozen employee salaries to meet its operational costs, but this is not enough to sustain the business long-term (Chapter 10: Cutting Costs at VentaCare, n.d.). Lastly, the case study indicates that Ventacare Nursing Home spends heavily on non-financial employee benefits, such as paying tuition for career advancement in higher education institutions, providing disabilities and health insurance plans, and a retirement benefit. Allison is unsure of the next direction to cut costs, given the dire situation the organization is in and the need to remedy it urgently. Get in touch with us at eminencepapers.com. Cost-Cutting Recommendation

Allison Wiggan should consider freezing part of the employees’ non-salary benefits until the federal government’s revenue income and funding Ventacare receives resume. Currently, no state rules mandate that organizations pay tuition fees for their employees.  As such, Wiggan should make the discretionary decision to temporarily suspend all corporate funds being spent on employee career advancement endeavors in various institutions of higher education.

Also, the human resources department could replace this freezing of funds to pay employee tuition with a non-financial reward. For instance, employees could be given a medal for performing exceptionally weekly or receive recognition through emails to their colleagues with the organizational leaders copied (Habib et al., 2017). The above cost-cutting measure is easy to execute, does not attract legal penalties, and can be replaced with a non-financial reward, such as employee recognition.
