Rules for Effective Listening and Speaking
Jack broke several rules for effective listening outlined by Corvette (2007): he did not listen more; he stopped listening because he thought he knew what Wei was going to say; he assumed he knew what Ms. Lee meant; he interrupted; and showed no interest. Additionally, he did not seek new information to understand why Wei needed to discuss the project. Jack also broke some rules for effective speaking, including answering what was not asked (Ms. Lee did not ask for a deadline extension), being offensive by yelling, and being afraid to be silent.
Wei’s Handling of the Conflict
Although Wei’s frustration is understandable, leaving impulsively did not resolve the issue effectively and only prevented her from conveying important information. Alternatively, she could have first determined whether the conflict was due to temperament or communication failure, applied filtering techniques, and then called a time-out if the conflict escalated (Corvette, 2007). Additionally, adopting professionalism approaches such as demonstrating interpersonal skills would have helped create a calm environment and offer a foundation for solving the conflict sustainably (Mbegu, 2018).
Addressing Bias
Learning about Jack’s dislike of women would suggest that his behavior was rooted in gender bias, explaining the communication failure between him and Ms. Lee. Besides, women are more likely to view interruptions from men as indicative of gender bias and are thus likely to react negatively (Briggs et al., 2023). Therefore, Jack should practice filtering techniques to allow for effective communication.
He should recognize his bias and how women perceive him, and then identify the effort he will take. For instance, he could note, “I have gender bias. I anger women when I interrupt them. I need to attend bias awareness training to address my implicit biases and be an active listener when communicating with women.”
