Article Review- Ethics and Corporate Culture
Ethics play a vital role in a business. According to Hartman et al. (2021), business ethics includes making accountable and reasonable decisions. Therefore, ethics influence corporate culture by influencing the decisions made in the business. Khuong & Nhu (2015) review the impact of ethical leadership and organizational culture on employee commitment and sociability. One of the article’s main points is that ethical leadership and corporate culture significantly impact the sociability of employees in an organization. The authors argue that employees are more sociable when working in an organization where leaders respect them and offer a sense of ownership. Therefore, ethical leadership creates an organizational culture where employees are valued and supported to meet the organization’s objectives. The second main point of the article is that ethical leadership and corporate culture significantly impact the employees’ commitment to the organization. The authors argue that employees working in a conducive environment where they are treated fairly are more committed. The third main point is that effective leadership includes showing concern about ethical behavior by ensuring that those who violate ethical standards are punished equally despite their rank in the organization.
The article characterizes the impact of corporate culture on ethical decision-making based on the behaviors of the leaders in the organization. The authors argue that ethical leadership influences corporate culture, including following ethical standards when making decisions. The authors argue that the corporate culture of working towards the same goal and offering adequate employee support includes various measures that leaders should take. The first measure is establishing a shared ethical vision and communicating it to employees to ensure they are committed to the organization. Leaders should also communicate an acceptable code of conduct to all employees. The second measure is punishing everyone who violates ethical standards and rewarding and recognizing those who demonstrate ethical behavior. The third measure is gathering employee feedback about ethical behavior in the organization to identify improvement areas.
According to the article, the role of corporate leadership in establishing corporate culture is to ensure that employees behave in an acceptable way. For instance, the article states that leaders can influence ethical behavior by setting a code of conduct, recognizing and rewarding employees who demonstrate ethical behavior, and punishing those who violate ethical standards. The article also states that corporate leadership establishes culture by determining employees’ opinions about their working environment’s ethical standards. Corporate leadership also includes creating ethical values that employees should observe and creating a work environment where employees feel free to discuss ethical issues and dilemmas with their leaders. The article indicates that leaders should also set a good example by applying ethics in decision-making to create an organizational culture where employees value ethical behavior.
The information in the article is applicable in my field as a human resource manager because the human resource management practice includes making decisions that shape the organizational culture and ethical conduct of employees. For example, I may encounter an ethical dilemma in deciding the right employee to hire when one of the applicants is a close friend. In such a situation, I may apply the information on the ethical code of conduct and ethical standards to justify my reason for not hiring my friend in case they confront me for not hiring them. I may also use the information on ethical standards to justify my decision to stakeholders such as the company’s executive and board of directors.
