Introduction

If we are being honest, each and every one of us interacts with some form of art on a daily basis. Be it the paintings in our houses, the music we listen to, or the literature we read, art is a part of our lives. But do we ever pay attention to the greater role art plays in our cultures and societies? I am a person who loves art myself. Therefore, I have been curious about its role in our society. I want to highlight some of the important roles of art and culture in sharing our identities. Art is important, not just for entertainment but also to create a sense of identity for a social group.

Need

  1. Art has been a part of society since man existed.
    1. It has been a primary tool through which people express their beliefs, values, and identity.
    2. People have always used creativity as a form of expression. Through their art, they reflect their emotions, values, and beliefs (Billington 47).
    3. For example, art in the Renaissance was used to express awareness of nature, social situations, and individual values of man (Jardine and Brotton 123).
    4. Therefore, art is an important part of our society that needs to be nurtured.
  2. Art continues to play an important role in society today
    1. It is still a means of expression; people of different cultural backgrounds express their shared values and beliefs through art.
    2. Art today is also a medium for bringing people together. Through art, people remain connected to their identities and to each other.
    3. For example, Hispanic Heritage Month brings together Latin American and Hispanic communities to share their cultural art and music.

Satisfaction

  • Knowing the importance of art in society creates ways to embrace it and continue to benefit from it as a tool for bringing us closer to our identities.
    1. One of the ways that we can continue to use art and culture as a way of getting connected to our identities is by attending cultural events.
    2. Most communities in the United States have events that provide an opportunity for them to experience their arts and cultures. One of the ways to enjoy culture’s role in connecting society is to attend these events.
    3. Additionally, we can make it upon ourselves to frequently visit museums that represent our cultures. Museums provide an opportunity to learn about the history of art and culture and how it connects to our identities. Visiting these places is a good way of keeping us connected.
    4. Most importantly, we should buy art when we can to keep the artists creating. For art to prevail, there have to be creatives making it and the communities consuming it.

Visualization

  1. As art has been a part of our past, it will continue to be a part of our future.
    1. We should continue to interact with art, consume it, and remain connected through it.
    2. Our past, present, and future cultural values will stay connected with art.

Conclusion

As I close this speech, I urge you to be more intentional in your consumption of art. Pay attention to the role that art plays in your life. Try to identify why you like the pieces of art that you have in your home. Examine why you enjoy the types of art that you do. In doing this, you will realize that art is a reflection of our identities and values as a society. You will see that art plays a more important role than just entertainment. In this realization, I hope we will continue to use art to stay connected. When there are things forcing us apart, we should use art to come closer and maintain unity forever.
