Sample Answer
Alcoholism
Examine the underlying factors associated with alcoholism.
Alcoholism occurs due to developed alcohol dependence, in other words, known as alcohol addiction (Carpenter, 2007). Problematic drinking is attributed to many causes, namely physiological, biological, social, and psychological factors. The factors that underlie typically have different effects on different people. In social factors, drinking starts as a social activity, but it later moves into a habit comparatively quickly from family, friends, and the influence of society. Psychological factors are where psychological behaviors like self-worth issues trigger drinking.
If one is addicted to alcohol, their judgment is impaired severely, and it makes one commit actions that they otherwise would not (Carpenter, 2007). Alcohol makes people angry, belligerent, and prone to violence, and the crimes associated with alcoholism include robbery, sexual assault, aggravated assault, child abuse, and homicide, among others.
Among the actions that the legislature and the public policy can take to prevent criminal cases caused by alcoholism is to reduce the availability of cheap alcohol because an increase in alcohol prices reduces alcohol demand. In turn, crimes associated with alcoholism will be reduced (Carpenter, 2007).
