Example 1: The four horsemen of the Apocalypse

The four horsemen of the Apocalypse is one of the common Durer’s arts that conveys the message about the coming of the end of the age. According to Durer, when human beings read about the future, they forget that God is sovereign over the affairs of human beings (Price, 88). God knows what tomorrow holds, and nothing happens without God’s permission. Therefore, Durer’s Art aimed to convey that the end is nearer and that human beings should watch for God’s signs.

Text from the Bible

The last chapter of chapter six of the book of Revelation represents the scene where John the Apostle saw the lord Jesus talking to the seven-sealed scrolls from the hand of the Father. In chapters six through eleven, we read about the chronological events and what is expected at the end times.

Text from Revelation Chapter 6

The first seal rider on a White horse

For example, the verse that says, I watched as the lamb opened the first seven seals. I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like the thunder, come, I looked (Revelation 6:1-2) (Zuffi & Stefano, 113).

Element of Artwork

The second seal represents war. When he broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come,” and a horse went out; it was granted the armor to take peace from the earth. This represents a declaration of war. The third seal represents famine- I saw a black horse coming with pair of scales in his hands, representing lack.

Example 2: Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve represent Durer’s depiction of “the fall.” It represents the disobedience of human beings that would lead to their destruction (Zuffi & Stefano, 118).

Text from the Bible

Adam and Eve lived with God in the Garden of Eden, but the serpent tempted them to eat from the Tree of Knowledge (Genesis, Chapter 1-3)

Element of Artwork

The snake-the representation of the devil

The Garden of Eden-the Elk representation of black bile and a melancholic personality

The Rabbit representation of blood and sanguinity. The rabbit is a representation of the weak and unclean people.

Question

Albrecht Dürer’s art bridges a divide between Renaissance art and literature. Though Gutenberg’s printing press made the mass production of printed materials affordable, most Europeans still could not read. Dürer’s religiously-themed artwork conveys many of the seminal events of the Bible in visual form.
