Airport security

Airport security

Introduction

Airport security is one of the critical areas in cargo management that needs to be done right. Ineffective airport security could risk the cargo and thus, make the cargo management process ineffective too. There are many best practices in airport security that could enhance security and streamline cargo management. However, performing a security audit is one of the best practices that stands out to be a critical practice that must be implemented to foster security at the airport. A security audit is a systematic evaluation of the security of an organization’s security apparatus to gauge whether it conforms to the set standards. Airports are good examples of premises or organizations that must have tight security due to the many security risks they are prone to.

Best practice

Performing security audits as a best practice should be done occasionally to maintain high standards of security in the airport. A security audit is done by hired security experts or security specialized firms to assess and identify specific security challenges related to the organization (Eronen & Rousku, 2018). The assessment helps the experts understand the organization’s security needs and write a report. The report contains the assessment, evaluation, and recommendations. When evaluating the security elements, the experts measure them against the available security standards to establish whether the security processes meet them.

The security audit process starts with a comprehensive assessment of the premises and the surroundings. The assessment is followed by a technical analysis of the existing security technology in the airport (ASP, 2019). The analysts then check the airports’ existing security procedures and emergency plans. The experts further analyze the key and lock of both physical and online keys; the audit also covers the assets protection strategies of the airport (Ratledge, 2020). All the information gathered is put into a report with recommendations on what is supposed to be done.

Performing a security audit is an international regulatory requirement that organizations need to do. Organizations that successfully perform security audits and enhance security are often accredited with ISO 27001, an international standard for managing information security (Kirschenbaum et al., (2012). Examples of companies accredited by ISO 27001 include Google, Verizon, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and more. Some of the advantages of a security audit include helping in upgrading the security system and preventing potential crimes. One of the disadvantages of security audits is; that the process is costly to the organization (Kirschenbaum et al., 2012). Secondly, the audit is unsuitable for small organizations, and the experts can’t check and identify all the security issues.

Opinion

I totally agree that implementing security audits as the best practice is necessary to enhance and strengthen airport security since this helps a lot in cargo management. Security audits can be implemented in all areas of the air cargo environment to eliminate all security risks. The consequence of not implementing a security audit in an airport is that there will always be many criminal cases and security risks that curtail the smooth process of cargo management.

Conclusion and recommendations

Recommendations

I would recommend that, firstly, airports should implement security audits at least once every three years. Secondly, the airport management should always take the security audit report seriously and implement all the recommendations. Lastly, airports should effectively use all the security apparatus available to enhance the security for easy cargo management.

Conclusion

A security audit is one of the best practices in an airport security process. It is the assessment of the organization’s security process by experts to unearth important security concerns. For effective cargo management, airport security needs to be very effective. All airports need to carry out security audits occasionally to improve their security.
