Academic Integrity and Its Impact on the Life of a Social Student and Worker
Academic integrity is the commitment and expectation of honesty, trust, respect, fairness, responsibility, and general moral behavior in an academic setting (University of North Carolina, 2023). Academic integrity is very important in the social work field as it ensures that everyone is accountable for their own decisions and helps people be honest with each other, which results in building trust as well.
Academic integrity can impact life as a social work student by helping to achieve successful results and, hence, building a good profession if followed. When social work students practice the principles of academic integrity, they show their commitment to the ethical principles of social work. It also helps provide a positive learning environment for the student and others by having a good relationship with the instructors and friends. However, suppose a student does not follow the principles of academic integrity in ways like cheating, plagiarism, and fabrication, among others. In that case, it can result in a bad reputation, which can damage one’s future profession, failing and breaking trust with the instructors (Chapman University, 2022).
As for professional social workers, academic integrity is also critical as it establishes the credibility of one’s work and respect among the workers. Social workers are also majorly responsible for supporting and empowering individuals as they deal with many people; hence, they should be trustworthy, respectful, and ethical. Additionally, social workers are not supposed to be found practicing inappropriate behavior such as sexual misconduct, lying, and more, as this will result in consequences like losing one’s job and breaking trust with other individuals.
In conclusion, academic integrity is greatly important for both social work students and workers as it ensures that trust is maintained within the community and among workers. It also provides a positive working environment and a good reputation. By following the principles of academic integrity, social workers ensure a strong, supportive, and equal society.
