Milestone One- Defining Goals
As the soft drinks company aims for expansion and development, a conflict has emerged regarding allocating leadership positions in the new plant. Most senior and potential candidates for the positions are aware of the development, and they anticipate appointment. If they miss the positions, they will leave the organization. On the other hand, employees from the Canadian manufacturing plant feel they are most suited for the positions because the plant was the most efficient based on year-end results. The conflict will likely disrupt the project scope since resources and time will go toward ensuring workplace harmony instead of handling more demanding project tasks (Carroll, 2013). Also, the conflict will derail the attainment of the organization’s future-state goals since employees are invested in the resentment culture, as some have threatened to leave if they are not considered for upcoming posts (Shaikh & Kazi, 2015). Stakeholder analysis is one of the tools that will come in handy to define the issues in the conflict involving employees of the soft drinks company. In this paper, I will use the define phase of the DMAIC process to identify the issues facing the soft drinks company whose employees have vowed to leave if they do not get potential promotions.
Problem Statement
The soft drinks company is experiencing a pervasive problem of conflict for occupancy of future positions, leading to reduced staff collaboration, heightened internal tension, and reduced employee motivation.
Stakeholder Analysis
Employees
Interests
The current team of employees who have shown leadership capabilities are heavily invested in the conflict’s outcome. That is because they want career progression and development within the organization (Mitchell & Gamlem, 2015). However, there are many competing talents, and satisfying all is impossible.
Influence
More senior employees feel they are most qualified for the positions owing to their experience and leadership skills. Also, employees working in the Canadian plant believe they are the most suited since they produced the best results the previous year. By threatening to withdraw services, employees are using their expertise as leverage toward promotion to senior positions.
Organizational Leaders
Interest
Senior managers at soft drinks companies want to ensure workplace harmony after appointments and that they can retain all employees who have threatened to leave (Mitchell & Gamlem, 2015). Organizational leaders typically protect the organization’s interests. Therefore, their interests align with organizational needs.
Influence
Senior company managers have a significant influence since they are the ones who determine which employees will get promotions to lead the new plant. It is naturally expected that they will select suitable candidates based on their qualifications. The ultimate decision on who will work for the company lies with senior leaders.
Conclusion
The defined phase of the DMAIC process is crucial to successful project implementation. The process sets the stage for successful project implementation by identifying problematic areas the team will focus on. In the case above, the main project is to select leaders for the new plant. The define phase has played a crucial role in identifying the issues that could hinder project implementation, and managers can apply the insights from the define phase to avert the challenges.
