Narrative Essay – My First Experience in a Dodge Ball Game With My Grandpa in 1993.
I remember that day as if it happened yesterday. It remains vividly clear in my head to date despite happening many years ago. I had accompanied my Grandpa to watch a Dodgeball game in Los Angeles. He had always been a diehard fan of Dodge games and sometimes even coached junior players. However, that day we had gone there as spectators. Being a kid, I did not have a prior experience of any Dodge ball game before. I was thus curious to witness one game happening live.
On the weekend, Grandpa came home and requested me to join him in watching a game in Los Angeles. One of the playing teams was my Grandpa’s favorite, and he used to coach them before retiring. I could not turn down the offer given that I always enjoyed his company, and also I wanted to witness a live game other than watching from a TV. The game was scheduled to start at 1 pm. We made sure we arrived at the court by noon so that we could occupy the front seats.
Just as planned, we reached the court ten minutes before noon, and only a few people had arrived. Therefore, we had a golden chance to choose the seats that gave us a good view. We sat in the second row from the front. My Grandpa always loved the second row because it gave a good view, and also there were minimal disruptions from people.
I had carried two bags of popcorn to keep me busy while watching the game. By 1 pm the two teams lined up on the court, ready for action. The players seemed eager for the action from the way they were warming up. The referee stood at the edge of the court and blew the whistle for the match to start. It was exciting how the players were running up and down and dodging to avoid being hit by the ball. One player caught my attention. He was flexible and lucky. He was the one who made a lot of hits and caught most balls. The other team was avoiding him because he had made their players be thrown out. The team my Grandpa was supporting was the weaker team. At the beginning of the match, I told him the team that wore white jerseys would win. He claimed that he knew the players, and they were poor compared to the team he was supporting. He called them a ‘walkover.’ We even placed a bet, and he was supposed to buy me ice cream in case his team lost. I was shouting at my team because I knew in case they won, I would have a direct ticket to the ice cream shop.
By the end of the first ten minutes, Grandpa’s team had managed to eliminate all the rival team players. I was sad and hoped they would improve in the second round. The final results were in my favor as the team had managed to beat Grandpa’s team with 30-26 hits. I shouted to the players as if they would hear me. Some couples who sat behind us told my Grandpa that I was so lively and passionate about the game and that he should make sure that I joined one of the teams.
After leaving the court, we went to buy ice cream and other junk that my mum always refused to buy for me. I enjoyed my Grandpa’s company, and it has remained an event I will never forget in my life.
