Critical Thinking Questions – Leadership and Management
The book and the three videos provide valuable insights into management, leadership styles, and decision-making. This paper describes the three levels of management, the major leadership styles, and the major steps in the managerial decision-making process. The three tiers of management are top-level, middle-level, and low-level managers. (Naldo, 2016). Top-level managers are responsible for the organization’s overall direction, while middle-level managers are responsible for putting top-level managers’ policies and strategies into action. Subsequently, Low-level managers are in charge of supervising personnel and ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and successfully. To follow this, Top-level managers are also in the position of setting the organization’s goals and objectives, while middle-level managers are in charge of formulating plans to attain those goals and objectives. Low-level managers, on the other hand, are responsible for ensuring that the plans are executed effectively and efficiently.
The key leadership styles include authoritarian, democratic, laissez-faire, transformational, and transactional (Tracy, 2017). Autocratic leaders make decisions independently, without consulting their teams, whereas democratic leaders involve their teams in decision-making, soliciting input and feedback from their teams. Consistently, Laissez-faire leaders offer their people entire autonomy to make decisions without providing guidance or direction. (Pride et al., 2023). Finally, transformational leaders inspire and motivate their teams to achieve their objectives, whereas transactional leaders focus on attaining particular objectives and rewarding their teams for accomplishing them.
Subsequently, the primary steps in the managerial decision-making process are identifying the decision, analyzing relevant information, considering various alternatives, assessing the evidence, selecting the best alternative, taking action, and evaluating the results. (GreggU, 2017). Conclusively, it is important for managers to understand the different levels of management, leadership styles, and decision-making processes to lead their teams and achieve organizational goals effectively.
