Hard, Conway, and Moran (2006) define plagiarism as a presentation of foreign ideas as their own without a clear reference to the source. There exists a causal relationship between plagiarism and some social factors like the digital era, exposure to the internet, and the availability of an internet-based academic environment. These factors revolve around technology, making Information Technology the primary cause of plagiarism, especially at the university level.
Plagiarism has been known from the onset of civilization; the only thing that changed is our society’s media and sociocultural expectations (Sulikowski, 2008). The majority of today’s parents hold that the internet is vital for their children’s studies; they, therefore, give them excessive access to the accessibility of the internet. They, in turn, misuse it by plagiarizing, especially when they are caught up by time due to such factors as procrastination or negligence.
Similarly, in the context of ICT, plagiarism is made a walk in the park by how easy it is to copy. This is because accessing the internet takes less than a minute, and also, getting the materials is equally an easy task. It is quite tempting for students who have this fact at the back of their minds to work hard and complete their assignments on time, knowing very well that there is such an easy way out.
In conclusion, plagiarism is a recurring issue in universities, with the wide use of ICT being among the many other causes. Since the world is fast-changing and embracing technology as the new normal, we cannot do away with technology. Still, university students should be aware of a vice called plagiarism and the dire consequences if they decide to go through that route.
