The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is an approach that induces organizations to focus on social and environmental issues as much as they do on profits (Pereira & Martins, 2021). Similarities
Both the service and manufacturing industries incorporate the TBL in similar ways. Both industries incorporate TBL to ensure their products or services are the best possible. Every organization can measure the fruitfulness and value of the Triple Bottom Line through the B Impact Assessment. The above assessment contrasts the scores of the specific businesses against other businesses on subjects like employees, society, the environment, and governance (Matteson & Metivier, 2019). Every industry has an obligation to be ethically and socially aware, and the B Impact Assessment could likely affect how the community perceives the organization. Based on the company’s result, the assessment could indicate that the company is more or less interested and knowledgeable in the subjects outlined compared to other firms.
Differences
The manufacturing industry produces goods produced from materials. As a result, they will likely score more on the environment and governance sections of the B Impact Assessment. The above is because the industry has less concern about the people and is more concerned about the goods and the way they are produced, their environmental impact, and ensuring they meet the laws regulated by the industry.
On the flip side, the service industry uses people to offer services or goods. Thus, the service industry will probably have a bigger mark on the community and workers parts of the B Impact Assessment since it is more concerned with the people and less concerned with the product due to the service industries’ direct-to-customer relationship (Matteson & Metivier, 2019). The service industry does not have many regulated laws. In addition, the industry has a low concern for environmental violations due to the industry’s nature.
Example Strategies
An example of a suitable strategy to integrate into the service and manufacturing businesses would be to adopt the model of ethical decision-making. The above model describes the moral obligation as doing the correct thing even when the spirit and the law letter do not apply to the situation (Matteson & Metivier, 2019). The decision-making model mentioned above would enable each firm to predispose whether the decisions they make are consistent with the morals of their employees, the environment, and the community, or possibly forsaking rules and law.
An approach that would be suitable to integrate into the manufacturing business would be to integrate a philanthropic responsibility model. The model mentioned above describes philanthropic responsibility as contributing to the project of society even when they are independent of the specific industry (Matteson & Metivier, 2019). The responsibility model above would enable the manufacturing industry to engage with society and further participate in the lives of the workers responsible for the success of the company. If the company becomes more people-oriented, it possibly will become more successful as a result of creating a positive image in society.
