Human Resources Strategy

Human Resources Strategy

Recruitment and hiring are among the most critical activities in an organization because they dictate the kind of talent it acquires (Mathis et al., 2017). Declining to hire an applicant qualified for a position could lead to legal issues if the employee issues the organization for discrimination or unfair hiring practices (McNamara, 2008). It is, therefore, essential to observe the elements of fair hiring practices. The first element includes knowing the convictions relevant to risks of harm in the work environment. The second is asking about qualifications before asking about other things, such as initial application forms and criminal records. The third is using reliable methods to conduct a background check. The fourth is considering all evidence relevant to an applicant’s rehabilitation. The fifth element is designing the hiring process to implement best practices most effectively by training the human resources staff on recommended hiring practices and minimizing conflict of interest among decision-makers in the hiring process. When reviewing the decision not to hire an already qualified applicant for a vacant position, I would consider using reliable methods to conduct a detailed background check. An applicant may be eligible but not fit for the organization based on information uncovered in the background check. I would focus on any recent convictions relevant to the vacant position. For instance, if an applicant qualified for an accountant position has recently been convicted of being involved in fraudulent activities, they cannot be hired. The second element is considering all the evidence relevant to the applicant’s rehabilitation. For instance, if the applicant has recently been convicted of fraud and served their sentence, I would have to determine whether the organization could allow them to show that they were rehabilitated effectively.
