Effective leadership requires regular interactions with subordinates to understand their needs and set a strategic direction for others to follow. It is impossible to effectively lead others without an individual being able to understand and manage oneself because failure to understand oneself can result in selecting the wrong leadership approaches. According to Aly et al. (2019), leadership approaches should be aligned with a leader’s attributes and personality. For instance, if a leader selects a transitional leadership approach, they have to be open to new thinking, be active listeners, and have the ability to inspire others to work together. Transformational leadership also requires interpersonal skills, which dictate how leaders communicate with followers (Groves & LaRocca, 2011). Communication plays a vital role in effective leadership. The effectiveness of communication between leaders and followers requires selecting appropriate communication channels and encouraging open communication. Therefore, a leader needs to manage oneself to engage in discussions with followers, pass important information to them and encourage feedback.
Managing oneself also promotes effective leadership by reducing conflict between leaders and followers. Some conflicts between leaders and followers arise from a leader’s behaviour. For instance, during my internship, the general manager in my workplace embezzled funds, resulting in employee go-slows and strikes because their salaries were delayed. Suppose the general manager did a personal analysis to understand himself and identify the temptation to misuse resources as one of his weaknesses. In that case, he could have delegated the financial management responsibility to someone else or created measures to regulate the use of funds in the organization to avoid embezzlement. Therefore, leaders need to identify the behaviours that may create conflict and eliminate them to achieve effective leadership.
