Health Communication Goals and Objectives

Healthy People 2020 is one of the vocal and critical institutions that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2015) is using to promote the well-being of Americans. Identify three health communication objectives listed by Healthy People 2020 (Use the summarized list under the overview section on the direct link from your required reading. Note: they are listed in bullets under the provided link.)

The three primary health IT and communication objectives/targets include “supporting shared decision-making between patients and providers,” “delivering accurate, accessible, and actionable health information that is targeted or tailored,” and “increasing health literacy skills” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). All these three objectives have different meanings and importance to the healthcare system as well as the well-being of patients. There are also specific ways hospitals or healthcare providers can implement them effectively.

Discuss the importance of the health communications objectives you selected.

Objective one (supporting shared-decision making), health IT and communication play a significant role in assisting healthcare providers collaboratively, aiding patients to make value-congruent and evidence-informed decisions (Grad et al., 2017). Therefore, this shared decision-making process is imperative in screening for illnesses or diseases in which a close swap exists between benefits and harms. It provides a structured way of incorporating patient preferences, values, and evidence into the decision-making process in healthcare settings. Thus, shared decision-making can support conversations and talks, leading to enhanced, informed choices that match the issues that matter most to patients. I think the most effective way of promoting shared decision-making in hospitals is by communicating the risks, harms, and benefits to the patients and clarifying the values based on evidence. The whole process revolves around talking to the patient about what is best for them and incorporating their perceptions, feelings, and opinions in the final decision.

On the other hand, the benefit of ‘delivering or rendering actionable, easy to get to, and accurate health information/data that is tailored or targeted’ is that it allows care providers to offer the most precise and evidence-based care that meets each patient’s unique needs. The best way of achieving this objective is by using tailored or targeted communication – defined as any message or communication meant to reach a specific individual based on features unique to them, associated with the outcome of interest, and derived from a personal assessment. Therefore, using accurately tailored care in treating patients is critical in improving the healthcare outcomes of specific patients because they target their unique healthcare needs (Campbell et al., 1994). From personal experience, this can be achieved by designing screening procedures, treatment measures, and management models unique to each patient, even if they share the same condition.

Finally, the essence of increasing “health literacy skills” ranges from facilitating patient and clinical decision-making processes, building health knowledge and skills, supporting healthcare at home and in the community, enhancing the public health information system, improving the safety/quality of healthcare, to boosting the efficiency of public and health service delivery.

Using personal experience, how would you address the objectives you selected? (Note: Feel free to use your military or other job-related experiences related to your chosen goals.)

Community nurses, healthcare organizations, agencies, and other stakeholders can improve health literacy differently. From my previous work as a community nurse, we enhanced health literacy by practically delivering health services, including screening populations for infectious diseases, such as Ebola and the Flu, and treating them. We also educated them on the causes, risks, diagnosis, and treatment measures.
