Discussion Instructions

The Nurse Leader as Economist

What do a parking place, a picture of two men playing cards, a bird feather, and an old automobile have in common?

Surprisingly, each of these items are on the list of the most expensive items in the world. A parking spot in New York City, a painting titled “The Card Players” by artist Paul Cezanne, a feather from the extinct huia bird, and a 1963 Ferrari GTO will each set you back more money than most of us care to spend in a lifetime, let alone in a single purchase: Writing Workshop: Option 3.

There is another characteristic that these items share, and it helps explain the price tags. Each of these items is rare; so rare that they are difficult to find. Their low supplies drive their demand and, subsequently, their prices. This relationship between supply, demand, and price is a fundamental economic concept.

For this Discussion, you share thoughts about prevalent healthcare financing concerns and consider how these concerns are impacted by economic principles such as price, supply and demand, and need.

To Prepare

  • Research current healthcare financing concerns prevalent in the United States.
  • Reflect on these or any other healthcare financing concerns that you have observed and/or that your healthcare organization currently experiences.
  • Consider how these concerns relate to fundamental issues of economics, such as “price,” “supply vs. demand,” “scarcity of resources,” or “needs and wants.”
  • Consider how these concerns relate to the healthcare product or service solution you have proposed for your organization.

By Day 3 of Week 3

  • Post an explanation of what you believe to be the three most important healthcare financing concerns in the United States today. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how these three concerns relate to fundamental economic issues, such as “price,” “supply vs. demand,” etc. Explain how any of these concerns relate to the healthcare product or service solution you have proposed for your healthcare organization in Module 1.

Important Healthcare Financing Concerns in the United States

The major healthcare financing problems in America today are the high cost of care, limited access to affordable services, and disparities in resource allocation. The rising cost of treatments, medicines, and inpatient hospitalizations creates a tremendous financial burden on patients, leading to medical debt or deferred treatments (Shen et al., 2025). For example, inpatient hospitalizations in American healthcare are normally more than $10,000, making healthcare out of reach for the majority (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).

Limited access to affordable service is highly prevalent in rural and disadvantaged communities since healthcare providers are in short supply and premiums for insurance are expensive. Disparities in resource use disproportionately affect low-income and minority neighborhoods since specialists and advanced medical technology are disproportionately allocated.

How These Concerns Relate to Fundamental Economic Issues

The high cost of care indicates the principle of price since healthcare expenses keep escalating as a direct outcome of increased demand for advanced treatments and a limited supply of healthcare commodities and providers. Limited access to affordable service is impacted by supply and demand since healthcare providers are in short supply in general and rural areas, driving prices up and reducing supply. Disparities in resource allocations indicate the principle of scarcity since lower-income communities lack a method for accessing essential medical technology and specialists as a direct outcome of unequal healthcare budgeting (Hoagland & Kipping, 2024).

Healthcare Service Solution for Healthcare Organizations in Module 1

My proposed telehealth post-discharge follow-up program directly addresses the issue of limited access to affordable healthcare services. Telehealth-based post-discharge follow-up program uses virtual consultations and home-based patient follow-ups to ensure patients receive timely follow-up care without incurring unnecessary financial expenses (Bianco et al., 2024). The method reduces hindrances in accessing healthcare for especially vulnerable patient groups in underserved patient populations who experience difficulties accessing healthcare providers or lack appropriate modes of transport. The program is also key in reducing unnecessary readmissions and thus saves healthcare organizations and patients healthcare expenses.
