Writing Skills of a 4-year-old Child
Writing is vital for any school-going child as it forms the basis and foundation of any learning environment. Ideally, evaluating a four-year-old child’s writing without looking at the textbook would be a little challenging because I am still not equipped with all the details needed to determine a child’s writing skills. However, I would try to evaluate the writing of a four-year-old by first providing all the required writing materials, such as pens, crayons, and a notebook, and then asking the child to hold the pencil in its writing position. From here, if a child cannot hold the pencil in the writing position, this will confirm that the child’s writing capability might be low. Secondly, I will show the child a picture of an animal, for example, a cat. Then, I would ask the child to write down what they see in the picture. If the child fails to write down a simple name like a cat, I will know their writing skill is not well developed.
Another effective means of evaluating a four-year-old’s writing is asking the child to write their name clearly on a piece of paper or book. Children who correctly write their names are often good writers as they exhibit good writing skills. I will then ask the child to read their name loudly and then self-assess if they have correctly written it. Self-evaluations allow learners to reflect and observe their own work and improvement. Finally, I will ask the child to draw a picture of their choice and color it appropriately. As the child executes this exercise, I will observe closely how he colors and draws the picture while emphasizing details. This will help me make judgments on the child’s capability of writing. Using the discussed strategies, I can evaluate four-year-old writing without reading the book.
