Writing Across the Curriculum

Defining Writing Across the Curriculum

Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) is the idea that students develop and share their knowledge through written language in all subject areas and between subjects. It is a national initiative that aims to give all students, regardless of their major field of study, regular and substantial opportunity to write, edit, and share their writing in class from their first year of enrollment until graduation (Penn State Berks, 2024). It is an educational strategy that encourages the integration of writing instruction across different topics and disciplines. In addition, it highlights how important writing is as a tool for communication and learning across all subject areas, not simply English and language arts programs. Writing is integrated throughout the curriculum to facilitate rich and genuine discussions about standards in a relevant way, gives students and teachers choices and more open-ended questions, promotes higher-order thinking, and shows students and teachers how they are progressing.

Assessing Whether All Teachers Are Literacy Teachers No Matter Their Subject Area

Indeed, I agree that, at present, all teachers are literacy teachers regardless of the subject area they specialize in. Literacy in reading and writing is necessary for success in any field of study today (Shara et al., 2020). Regardless of the subject area a student is studying, teachers are important in helping them develop their reading and writing skills. Besides, success in any sector requires proficient reading and writing skills in today’s connected world. Although subject-specific knowledge is important, all disciplines require the ability to communicate effectively through reading and writing. Therefore, regardless of whether their primary area of attention is on another subject, all teachers contribute to developing reading abilities. This means all teachers are literacy (reading and writing) teachers, regardless of their subject area.
