The nature of spirituality and ethics from a Christian perspective is an interpretation of the text found in the Bible and the teachings presented in such texts. From a Christian perspective, spirituality is how an individual relates to God. It involves having a strong trust in God, abiding by the teachings of the Bible, and looking for opportunities to explore how to use the Bible’s instruction to deepen one’s connection with God. Spirituality from a Christian perspective can also be understood as a way of living in which one seeks to be guided by the teachings of the Bible in their daily life, including dealing with periods of trouble and trials, as well as in how one makes decisions and relates with others. It is also depicted as the overall moral growth in a way that is reflective of what God expects of humans. On the other hand, ethics from a Christian perspective is the display of character that aligns with the fundamental Christian teachings on morality. It is viewed as how an individual shows love and compassion for others. As per the Grand Canyon University (n.d.), it is necessary to put other people’s wants and interests above your own and act in a way that demonstrates a commitment to the Christian ideals of love and service to others. Further, it is the ability to ensure all actions aim to achieve justice for others who may be vulnerable within the community. Additionally, ethics from a Christian perspective is an expression of integrity, honesty, and a consistent adherence to Christian values in all engagements.

Based on the topic Resources, in 250-300 words, explain the term scientism and describe two of the main arguments against it.

Scientism is a speculative worldview focused on understanding the truth about the world and reality and holds the belief that knowledge about the world and the universe can only be understood through scientific methods and inquiry into human behavior and beliefs (Burnett, 2012). Scientism overlooks the differences in various research methods and disciplines in science, including social and natural science, arguing that scientific methods can help explore and understand such fields. Various arguments against scientism exist. Two main arguments against scientism are that science is limited in exploring subjective experiences and that scientism can be self-refuting. Arguably, scientific methods are more focused on using objective, measurable, and numeric data to understand the world and explain a number of phenomena that exist within the natural world (Burnett, 2012). These include the various individual and personal experiences and perspectives on certain issues or phenomena in their world. In such cases, the various personal experiences are basically subjective and cannot be quantified. Hence, the use of scientific methods may present an incomplete description or explanation of such experiences or views. Additionally, scientism is self-refuting in the sense that it does not satisfy the definition of science and that the arguments brought up in scientism as true cannot be justified on the basis of scientific research. In this case, strong scientism in its arguments of scientific methods can make claims that do not satisfy its own requirements for acceptability as true (Moreland, 2018).

In 125-150 words, explain ultimate reality.

My personal worldview of ultimate reality is shaped by both religious and scientific understandings and views of the world we live in. Ultimate reality is the existence of and recognition of the highest authority (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). As a Christian, ultimate reality can be depicted in how Christians present the view of God. In ultimate reality, as per Christianity, a monotheistic religion, only one God is the highest authority of all that exists (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). Based on my Christian religious roots, this is an ultimate reality that cannot be counterargued. Only one true God exists. From the scientific knowledge I have developed to date, my understanding and view are shaped by the arguments and experiences explored in chemistry and physics explaining the laws of nature. For instance, an ultimate reality is that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can only be transformed and transferred in various states, such as gaseous, solid, and liquid.

My personal worldview and understanding of the nature or origin of the universe are also shaped by an interplay of both religious and scientific worldviews. From my Christian understanding, especially based on the text and teachings from Genesis (Bogue & Hogan, 2022), I believe that the universe came to be as a result of divine creation by God. God created all that exists. Scientifically, theories of the origin of the universe have shaped how I understand the universe, including its origins. For instance, theories such as the Big Bang Theory have created the perspective that the universe developed from a point of singularity that expanded and cooled, leading to the formation of matter and later the universe, including galaxies such as our Milky Way galaxy, the stars such as our sun, and planets such as our earth.

In 125-150 words, explain what it means to be a human being and if there is purpose in human life and existence.

What it means to be a human being is defined by the ability to think, communicate, and act in a more organized and civilized way than other animals. Biologically, one can be defined as being a human being by their ability to be self-aware, aware of their environment, showing emotions and sympathy towards situations and other creations, and being able to decide based on previous experiences. From my Christian background, I believe there is a purpose in human life and existence. According to the Bible, man was created in God’s image and commissioned to rule over all that was created on earth and use his power to create more beauty and order (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). This means humans were created with a plan and a ready purpose to maintain and improve God’s creation.

In 125-150 words, explain what knowledge is and what the sources of knowledge are.

Knowledge is understanding a phenomenon or situation based on experience and investigation or reading from various sources. I believe knowledge is contextual in the sense that it depends on the source, how it is gained, and why it is gained. Knowledge can come from religious texts such as the Bible. This means divine knowledge based on the word of God. It can also come from observation and perception of others or things. Knowledge can also come from experiences in that by getting directly involved in a scenario or action, one can learn and develop knowledge. Knowledge can also be gained from research, from listening to others who have authority on a particular subject, such as lecturers, and through intuition, as well as innately without the need to learn or experience.

In 125-150 words, explain ethics and where the knowledge of right and wrong comes from.

Ethics are the principles of wrong and right that guide our behaviors (Bogue & Hogan, 2022). It helps us make moral decisions and act morally. The knowledge of right and wrong can come from many sources. It can come from the Bible in texts that guide Christian ethical principles. From the Bible, what is right and wrong is clearly defined. The definitions of right and wrong are also clearly provided within the social and cultural contexts in which we exist. The knowledge of wrong and right can be learned from the various philosophical views on ethics, such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and ethical relativism. Knowledge of right and wrong can also be gained from learning and legal institutions and texts such as the constitution and regulations.

The purpose of my life has been driven by empathy and a need to serve others. It has led me to have a career in healthcare. I believe my purpose is to care for those in pain and suffering to help them manage the conditions that cause them pain and suffering. My purpose is also to help others heal and overcome their inability to enjoy life due to health-related barriers to enjoying the wholeness of life. I also feel that my purpose is to give voice to those who are voiceless within the healthcare system and society in matters of health. Moreover, I am determined to advocate for patients and communities in a way that helps them get better healthcare services within aspects of the healthcare system, including the quality of the services, costs, and availability of the services.

In 125-150 words, explain the influence of your personal worldview values in decision-making within current or future professional practice.

My personal worldview values ensure that I make all decisions related to patients and as well as relationships with other care providers in a manner that aligns with ethical principles and guidelines in healthcare. My personal worldview values also ensure that my approaches in practice are inclusive and open to the ideas of others. This influences my propensity towards making collaborative decisions, which include the patient and other parties, including care providers. My personal worldview values have ensured and will always ensure that I make decisions in a manner that considers personal factors such as the culture of the patients I serve. This means making culturally sensitive decisions in my current and future professional practice. Additionally, my personal worldview values require me to be accountable for my actions. Therefore, they guide my decisions so that I am always ready to take responsibility for the outcomes of such decisions.
