World Religions – Buddhism
Buddhism is one of the top five religions in the world and is characterized by a variety of traditions and spiritual practices largely followed by its members. It originated in ancient India and is mostly practised in the East and South Asian regions in countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan. Being among the top five religions worldwide, Buddhism has spread outside the predominantly Buddhist Asian countries into other regions, including the West. Just like any other religion, Buddhism has rules and regulations that are to be strictly followed by its members. For example, Buddhists forbid killing, stealing, lying, and intoxicants that cloud the mind. These rules and regulations are similar to those of other major religions, like Christianity and Islam, and hence, Buddhists peacefully coexist among these other religions. Prayers are conducted in a temple where Buddhists worship while barefooted and seated on the floor while facing an image of the Buddha. Buddhists do not believe in a “God”, but rather believe that enlightenment can be achieved through the development and practice of morality, meditation, and wisdom. I lived in Yokosuka, Japan for five years while serving in the navy. During my time in Japan, I met people from the Buddhist religion and also experienced Buddhism. People from this religion are kind and respectful since their culture teaches them to be respectful to everyone. Some of the Buddhist friends I made explained to me that anyone could become a Buddhist simply by taking refuge in Triple gem and following a ceremony. During this ceremony, one would be taught to uphold the five precepts, which include “do not steal, do not kill, do not commit sexual misconduct, do not take intoxicants and do not encourage false speech.” The five precepts guide Buddhists through their way of life by establishing morally acceptable behaviors and forbidden behaviors within their religion.

Question
Capture your view of a world religion before your study. The aim of this paper is to allow you a chance for you to take a “snap shot” of your knowledge of one particular tradition before you begin readings and modules on the religions of the world so you can better appreciate the learning you are about to experience. You are to select one of the world religions covered in the course (Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism) and that it is not your own religion and- write a one-page paper that describes the religion to the best of your ability. Do not write a research paper; rather, try to capture your thinking at the present moment.
