The assessment results suggest that my workplace does not put much effort into improving the welfare of its workers. The overall score also indicates that the workplace environment is unhealthy. Therefore, the workplace is not civil. Di Fabio & Gori (2016) states that a civil workplace is characterized by high etiquette and socially acceptable behaviours. Our workplace has socially unacceptable behaviours such as unfair and unreasonable distribution of work and withholding information from employees. These behaviours reduce the civility of the workplace because they imply that the organization is only concerned about its performance and profitability at the expense of employee welfare. Our organization is also not civil because it does not uphold formal procedures such as maintaining respectful communication. Respect is a crucial element in organizational communication because it ensures that employees maintain a formal relationship.

Incivility in the workplace is inevitable, especially in organizations experiencing stiff competition. One of the instances where I experienced workplace incivility was when I was working as a junior nurse in a local healthcare facility. The head nurse often assigned many tasks to the junior nurses, and in most instances, we were overworked. One day, I was late in submitting my weekly reports, but I had sent the head nurse an email requesting additional time. She confronted me in front of a patient and accused me of being slow and incompetent. I reported the issue to the human resource management department, and we were both summoned. I explained that I had informed the head nurse that I would submit the reports late, and she admitted that she saw the email but did not open it. She then apologized for humiliating me in front of my colleagues and patients and was suspended for two weeks.
