Womens and Mens Leadership Styles in My Organization

Womens and Mens Leadership Styles in My Organization

Research done on leadership, especially when it comes to gender, varies, with a majority arguing that women and men have different styles of leadership. As a Customer Advocate II at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, I have observed some differences concerning the leadership styles of women and men leaders in the organization. On the one hand, I noticed that women leaders at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas tend to utilize a leadership style that often focuses on people and relationships. They tend to lead by consensus, which is all about creating a healthy working environment, collective satisfaction, and team cohesion (Zbihlejová et al., 2018, p. 341). For example, women leaders in the organization hold consultation meetings before making a big decision. On the other hand, the leadership style of men leaders in my organization is the opposite of women’s. Male leaders are more task-oriented, which means their primary objective is achieving their goals (Khan et al., 2015, p. 88). As such, male leaders at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas mainly focus on time management, efficiency, and how to increase productivity.

Some of the challenges women face in their leadership roles in this organization are mostly based on gender biases, whether explicit or implicit. Numerous studies, including Moss-Racusin et al. (2013), demonstrate that both men and women have implicit biases against women (p. 16477). These biases affect a person’s behaviour and attitude toward a woman leader (Pritlove et al., 2019, p. 502),  like seeing a woman as not competent enough to make certain decisions. Having to prove themselves to be capable as leaders while men do not have to is a big challenge for women.

Further, the difference between typical women’s and men’s values manifests itself in the leadership of my organization in two major ways. For example, teams with women leaders have more team cohesion than those led by men. Nonetheless, teams led by men are faster, especially in terms of decision-making, because there is little to no consultation done, unlike in women-led teams. In conclusion, there are clear variations in the leadership approaches chosen by women and men in my organization. However, both of these approaches are equally successful and have no influence on either gender in leadership positions.
