Transition to tertiary education often presents considerable challenges (Thompson et al., 2021). Usually, one opens to unchartered waters where different realities converge. Likewise, the environment within tertiary institutions is like an open book where one has to make their own decision, and little guidance is available to aid decision-making processes. While some get lost in rather immoral things such as drug use, others brave the social and ethical challenges to come out and graduate with excellent degrees. There is a thin line between the two factions. For learners who succumb to environmental challenges, poor decision-making and a lack of wisdom is often blamed. Contrarily, wisdom often guides individuals into making sound decisions and refraining from any evil that may jeopardize their current and future wellness within the tertiary learning sphere (Conroy et al., 2021). These indifferences continue to highlight the significance of embracing wisdom in real life.

The main parties involved in the highlighted social scenario include individuals transitioning to tertiary education, their peers, and the environment. The individual is often tasked with making decisions that either favor or disfavor their survival through their educational journey. Peers are fellow learners who are equally entering tertiary education and those already in school. They are usually the major source of influence and contribute to the decision-making processes of individuals in school. The environment integrates all competing factors that may influence an individual’s decision-making. These may include the abundance of freedom and easy accessibility of vices, such as drug use.

An ethical dilemma apparent within the social scenario is whether or not to conform to the social norm apparent within tertiary institutions at the expense of academic, personal, and social excellence. In this case, the abundance of freedom and peer influences may sway an individual toward the path of failure or excellence.

Specific verses in the book of Proverbs may guide the decision-making processes, behavior, and attitudes of an individual transitioning to tertiary education. In the tenth verse, the father tells the son, “My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them” (New International Version, 2011, Prov. 1:10). The verse discourages learners from falling into negative peer influences. Likewise, the chapters also emphasize the significance of fearing the Lord as it will help them discern what is right and wrong (Proverbs 1-4 New International Version). These provisions may guide learners into making moral decisions that will guarantee their peace and excellence.

To ensure excellence when transitioning to college education, one should refrain from negative influences while embracing wisdom teaching on morality and ethical behavior as captured in Proverbs. This will guide students into making good decisions and discerning what is good or right. Likewise, teachings from the book of Proverbs will allow them to embrace the Lord as he is the source of wisdom. This will, in turn, enable them to keep his commands and guarantee their well-being (New International Version Proverbs 1-4).
