Why People Form and Maintain Family Units

Why People Form and Maintain Family Units

In life, people experience both good and bad episodes, and it is human nature to need social support. According to Black & Flynn (2021), social support can give humans a sense of wellness and is important for stabilizing and recovering from a crisis. Among the cornerstones of social support is the family unit, along with friends and community.

People form and maintain families first because family is the first social contact humans encounter. Individuals are often familiar with the environment they grow up in, and it is difficult to erase that experience even when they are grown. This explains why Black & Flynn (2021) find that clients may not accept group counseling simply because they feel like strangers would judge them and see them as incompetent, as opposed to the family unit that already knows the individual and would make a judgment based on familiarity with the individual.

Additionally, the bond created and established within family units is intrinsic and difficult, if not impossible, to break. Many research studies have indicated that the dyad between a parent and a child and the family environment- including primary caregivers- are the basis of children’s healthy development and well-being (Gadsden, Ford, & Breiner, 2016). Gadsden, Ford, & Breiner (2016) add that from when a child is born, they learn and depend on their parents/primary caregivers to care for and protect them. It has been argued that the effect of parents may never be bigger than during the preliminary years of life when the child’s brain is developing rapidly and when the family shapes and molds the child’s experiences (Gadsden, Ford, & Breiner, 2016). Despite how costly forming and maintaining a family may be, breaking that bondage is impossible or even difficult. This is also why parents and children are usually negatively affected when a family separates or when parents get a divorce. The negative effects are felt all around, from parents to children (Black & Flynn, 2021).

In summary, family is the first social contact that people encounter in their lives. Usually, during their rapid brain development years, the bondages formed in the family unit stay for a lifetime. Individuals consider this important because of the support they get from families, which otherwise they cannot get in the outside world. That’s why people are not willing to give up the gift of family for financial or otherwise comfort.
