Why is Goal Setting Important in Strategic Planning?
Goal setting remains vital in strategic planning. Goal setting informs resource allocations and drives organizational priority setting. Goal setting will also drive budgeting and inform objectives used to synchronize employees’ efforts toward attaining the organizational vision. Additionally, strategic goals will inform human resource planning, information technology resources, and other operations. George et al. (2019) report that goal setting in strategic planning constitutes the very fabric that informs organizational success. Besides aligning organizational operations with its vision, it also guides routine organizational operationalization necessary for success.
Poorly developed goals are a recipe for organizational underperformance. It undermines efforts toward enhancing productivity and meeting organizational objectives. Poor goal setting may also alter organizational markers of success, skewing them towards the lower side of organizational success. This will have an impact on the performance trajectory as markers of success are informed by outcomes rather than finishing or accomplishing the goal(Höpfner & Keith, 2021). Poor goal setting is also an expensive organizational failure that may lead to the demoralization of organizational employees. When poor goals are developed, employees may lack the motivation and drive to implement some of the organizational strategies.
Prioritization of goals remains a mandate for organizational leaders and employees. Goal prioritization is a multistep process that begins with the identification of some organizational goals that build on the organizational objectives. The second step is breaking down the goals. This step includes listing the tasks required for each goal, the length to accomplish the goal, and the organizational measures required. The prioritized goals are specific, measurable, timebound, attainable, and relevant. Cutting out distractions is a good practice in goal prioritization. It allows the organization to focus on what is important and eliminate wastage. Measuring progress will also inform whether the organization is on the right track to achieving the goal.
