There are different reasons why a teacher is so important in helping a child’s brain grow, including that a teacher acts as a source of stimulation and enrichment for the growth of a child’s brain. Teachers provide students with a comfortable environment that stimulates their growth by providing and engaging them with different learning experiences. These experiences enable students to think, thus enhancing their brain growth (Kostelnik et al., 2011). For example, teachers introduce students to different learning concepts, including discussions, and challenge them to engage and solve challenging tasks that promote cognitive growth (Darling-Hammond et al., 2020). Engaging in continuous engagement and participation enhances the development and growth of the brain, which is where new pathways and neural connections are formed.
Teachers play a significant role in enhancing the child’s social interaction skills. These skills are essential in the development of the brain. Students’ social skills are enhanced as they interact with peers, teachers, or older people. Other enhanced aspects include cooperation, perspective-taking, and empathy, which are involved in the complex processes of brain development and growth (Kostelnik et al., 2011). When students develop positive social skills and interactions, their overall well-being and emotional regulation are enhanced, which indirectly supports the child’s cognitive development.
Furthermore, teachers promote the growth of a child’s brain by creating a structured learning environment for them, promoting the development of their cognitive skills. These skills include problem-solving skills, attention, and memory (Saguni, 2023). Engaging children in challenging experiences, games, and puzzles helps them challenge their cognitive thinking and skills, thus encouraging them to be creative and think critically (Kostelnik et al., 2011). A structured learning environment helps develop executive functions such as decision-making and practicing self-control, which, in turn, enhances brain growth and development.
In conclusion, instructors play a critical role in supporting a child’s brain development by creating engaging surroundings, encouraging social contact, giving organized learning opportunities, delivering tailored support, encouraging emotional well-being, and imparting cognitive skills and techniques. Their advice and knowledge are invaluable in helping kids develop cognitively and prepare for college and lifelong learning.
