Where in the World is Evidence-Based Practice?

Evidence-based practice (EBP) refers to applying science-based knowledge generated from scientific studies in healthcare service provision. Incorporating evidence-based practice in healthcare service delivery improves the quality of healthcare service (Mellyn & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Worldwide, healthcare professionals and various healthcare organizations aim to implement EBP. Accordingly, the quality of healthcare has been observed to improve markedly (Cullen et al., 2020). Therefore, all healthcare organizations need to incorporate EBP into their mission and vision.

While reviewing the healthcare organizations with EBP, I bumped into the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). This is an organization with healthcare professionals committed to providing healthcare services to the elderly, promoting independence and quality of life. AGS was established in 1942 and has serial numbers, including geriatric nurses, geriatricians, social workers, and pharmacists. The organization practices EBP, as stated in its vision, to maintain health, independence, and safety for the elderly (AGS, 2020). The organization aims to provide quality and patient-centered care that is well-informed by geriatric guidelines.

Furthermore, AGS has an annual conference, an education event that provides its members with current scientific knowledge on the research about aging, the clinical care of the elderly, and the models for healthcare delivery (AGS, 2020). Accordingly, the professionals are equipped with current evidence that should be incorporated into their practice. Additionally, the organization is also grounded in EBP. This is evident through the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program on its website, where the members participate in preventing falls among the geriatrics in nursing homes and hospitals. For instance, the organization sent a letter to the Senate Special Committee informing them about the fall risks, associated injuries, and deaths that threaten the quality of life of the elderly (AGS, 2020). It went ahead and recommended ways of preventing falls.

As a nurse, my perception of AGS has been very positive. I always viewed the organization as more of a charitable organization aimed at helping the elderly who are abandoned. However, after reviewing its website, I understand that its services are useful to all geriatrics. I have acknowledged that the organization aims to improve the quality of health of geriatrics and maintain their dependence through the application of evidence-based practice.
