My Top Three Leadership Styles
Leadership skills in nursing, regardless of the work role, title, and experience, are a critical requirement for all nurses (Major, 2019). My top three leadership styles are the collaborator, the provider, and the harmonizer. As a collaborator, I view efficiency in nursing as a result of collaboration and teamwork. I ensure the work environment fosters effective communication and collaboration. Further, being a provider means ensuring that other nurses have the right support at the right time during care delivery. Additionally, as a leader who employs the harmonizer leadership style, I like it when everything works together as one. I ensure that collaboration is based on trusting relationships among the nurses.
Potential Personality Blind Spots
An individual’s traits and characteristics, along with their experience as leaders, education, and how they relate with others, are major factors that influence nursing leadership (Cummings et al., 2021). I noted that I have some blind spots in my personality that can influence my leadership style. For instance, I realized that I tend to avoid conflict to ensure things remain in harmony. However, avoiding conflict can negatively impact the long-term harmonization of things.
How My Personality Typology Makes Me a Better Leader
My personality typology helps me overcome by personality blinds which make me a better leader. For instance, I am emotionally intelligent. Emotional intelligence can help understand and appreciate the emotions of others, which is necessary for creating relationships with others as a nurse leader (Cummings et al., 2021). I can also communicate effectively, which is necessary for effective leadership.
Organizational Environments in Which I Am Likely to Thrive and Struggle
As a collaborator, provider, and harmonizer, I am more likely to thrive in organizational environments that support collaboration and teamwork. I am likely to deliver my best if the organization provides the necessary resources to support nursing practice and the leadership role. However, based on my leadership styles and personality, I am likely to struggle in work environments that lack managerial support and that work is individualized.
My SMART Goals That Focus on Self-Improvement
The following are two SMART goals that I have developed for self-improvement and overcoming my personality blind spots:
SMART Goal One: To improve my conflict management skills by taking a short conflict resolution course to help me overcome my conflict avoidance behavior in the next three months.
SMART Goal Two: Regularly obtain feedback from other nurses regarding my leadership styles and what more they feel I can do.
Leadership Skills I Possess that Make Me an Effective Facilitator and Negotiator in the Workplace
Three leadership skills that make me an effective facilitator and negotiator in the workplace include being a good and active listener, honouring commitments, and always encouraging others to provide their opinions and get involved. Being a good listener comes from my empathetic nature, which enables me to consider others, their views, and how decisions affect them.
Future Leadership Skills that I May Not Currently Possess
The future leadership skills that I will focus on to make me an effective facilitator and negotiator in the workplace include developing the ability to make tough choices for the benefit of the organization and the patients and balance such with how they impact other nurses, being a strategic thinker rather than planning for the short-term, and persuasive skills.
