What it Means to be Ethical as it Relates to Personal Academic and Professional Growth

The Meaning of Being Ethical

Ethics play a vital role in shaping a person’s behavior and choices. According to Qun (2010), virtue ethics focuses on the kind of individual a person may or should become by emphasizing the subject’s actions. Therefore, to be ethical in relation to personal growth includes developing the values that enable an individual to become ethical and observe ethical behavior. Ahmad (2013) defines ethical behavior as acting in the sense of wrong and right, bad and good, and evil and virtue. In academic and professional growth, being ethical includes developing the capability to adhere to academic and professional ethics.

An Ethical Dilemma and How the Issue Was Resolved

Volunteering in a shelter facility has exposed me to various ethical dilemmas. In one instance, I encountered a situation where an illegal immigrant with a newborn baby came to the facility seeking shelter because her abusive husband had kicked her out. The facility had a strict policy prohibiting employees from giving shelter to undocumented immigrants because we could lose our licenses and donors. I resolved the dilemma by contacting management to allow us to shelter the child in the shelter’s nursery for at least one week as the mother was looking for an alternative shelter. Management agreed to my proposal and contacted the community social worker to inform her about the situation and get authorization to host the child.

The Influence of General Education Courses on My Ethical Values

General education courses have given me a different approach to the world by enlightening me on my role in improving the community around me, thus facilitating the development of ethical values such as self-discipline, honesty, integrity, and responsibility. The courses have also enlightened me on distinguishing between right and wrong and good and evil based on how various actions impact society, thus enhancing the development of ethical values.
