Week 6 MSN 600 – Initial Discussion
The outcomes of an intervention play a significant role in practice change. However, the outcomes cannot tell whether an intervention has worked. This creates the need to evaluate such outcomes in order to determine the success of the intervention implemented. Evaluating the role of outcomes in practice change through research can be beneficial as it can help validate the effectiveness or success of an intervention in managing a specific health problem as shown by Ruegg (2021) in a study evaluating the outcomes of antibiotics in veterinary setting to treat clinical mastitis. At the same time, validating the outcomes of an intervention also shows that change in practice based on the outcomes can lead to intended outcomes. Such evaluations of outcomes in change practice through practice also help identify gaps in previous studies and outcomes and areas of improvement. Such gap identification can further guide the design of new approaches to research that can lead to more beneficial patient outcomes. It also helps practitioners and research to understand the effects of interventions/treatments on clinical outcomes and quality of life of patients from the patient’s perspective (Pantaleon, 2019).
For my project focused on the effectiveness of pico laser treatment in reducing hyperpigmentation among women with melasma, I will evaluate the roles of outcomes through a change proposed from research findings by checking on the change from the baseline MASI score and the post-pico laser treatment MASI score. This means collecting data throughout the implementation of the project implementation period on pre-specified and expected outcomes, as well as controlling the change in practice from using topical hydroquinone to pico laser treatment in order to compare outcomes and experiences of patients using the topical treatment and the laser treatment. Dependent variables include the change in pigmentation intensity on the melasma area, changes in skin color quality, patient satisfaction and quality of life with pico laser treatment. Additionally, I will evaluate the roles of outcomes through a change proposed from research findings by focusing on the individual patient experiences and views on their skin color and health after going undergoing pico laser therapy.
