WEEK 6 DISCUSSION RESPONSE

WEEK 6 DISCUSSION RESPONSE

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your post. I would like to add some bit of information on ADHD employees at the workplace. Symptoms of ADHD, if not accommodated or managed efficiently, can cause challenges for teams in the workplace. An employee with ADHD can be disorganized, have challenges with management and planning work, have a poor estimation of the time they need to complete a task which leads to submission of work at the last minute (Rosario-Hernández et al., 2020). When such an employee is working in a team, havoc can arise as other team members scramble to complete their work following a ripple effect of the said employee’s late submission. An employer may incur expenses because of lost productivity, increased costs of healthcare, and absenteeism. A person with untreated ADHD may face numerous challenges in the workplace, and these may include a lack of dependability, inability to change, high rate of error, high absenteeism, tardiness, and interpersonal conflict. The consequence of such behaviors includes suspensions, reprimands, loss of pay, demotions, and termination (Rosario-Hernández et al., 2020). Persons with ADHD have high unemployment rates and frequent changes in jobs and are often overlooked for positions of higher pay.

When an employer fails to consider accommodating an employee with ADHD, it can be a serious mistake and even cause serious risks in liability. In this case scenario, the employer should allow the employee to take ADHD drugs. ADHD can be covered as a disability by the Americans with Disabilities Act or laws which are similar in different states. ADHD may also be a serious health condition that warrants employee rights under Family and Medical Leave Act (Abreu, 2018). It would be better for the employer to engage the employee and offer reasonable help rather than risk violating the law.
