The dietary intake recommendations I looked at are from the World Health Organization (WHO). The website has recommendations on what constitutes a healthy diet for adults and infants. Based on the website, a healthy diet constitutes at least 400 g of fruits and vegetables daily, less than 10% of total energy intake from free sugars, less than 30% of total energy intake from fats, and not more than 5 g of salt per day (World Health Organization, 2022). However, there is no discussion on the impact of the recommendations on different parts of the digestive system. One potential impact of reduced salt intake is a decrease in the formation of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Salt has chloride ions which are critical in the formation of hydrochloric acid (Petit et al., 2019). Since hydrochloric acid activates various enzymes that are essential in the digestion of proteins, low stomach acid is associated with reduced protein digestion. Recommending increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, is beneficial as they contain fibre. Dietary fibre can absorb water, thus helping lubricate the large intestine (He et al., 2022). As a result, products of digestion move smoothly along the intestine. Moreover, reducing the intake of free sugars, as recommended, can help reduce the release of insulin by the pancreas. Insulin is released in large amounts after meals rich in sugar to lower plasma concentrations of glucose. Therefore, minimizing free sugars can reduce the release of insulin by the pancreas, thus preventing insulin resistance. Also, recommending a diet low in fats can help improve stomach emptying. Fats slow down the rate at which the stomach empties food substances into the small intestine. Therefore, a diet low in fats can help prevent gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea and bloating.
