The first way to discuss mental retardation with children is to teach them to be friends with special needs children and be able to report cases of teasing or bullying (Gavin para 6). For special needs learners, everything about learning can be more challenging; therefore, they require help that everyone around the school should be able to offer. Special needs children also want friends, but making friends and meeting people can be challenging. Other children can tease or make fun of them. Therefore, children should be taught to report to the teachers if anybody bullies or teases the special needs learners.

A second way is encouraging non-special needs learners to be helpful to the special needs learners. They can be encouraged to ask them if they require help, like opening the door and carrying books. Also, non-special needs learners can be encouraged to ask special needs learners to join them for lunch. However, they should not be over-helped as special needs children also need to be independent.

Lastly, being friendly and communicating with special needs children is a way to discuss mental retardation with children. This will help other children understand what it means to be a special needs child. As a result, the non-special learners will help fill an exceptional desire for the special needs kids and the need to have good friends who understand them (Gavin para 9).

The organization has teachers, researchers, physicians, clinicians, and policymakers worldwide. Its mission is to promote sound research, progressive policies, effective practice, and universal human rights for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The AAIDD site is very interactive. It highlights the three goals of AAIDD: 1) enhancing the ability of professionals working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; 2) sustaining an effective, well-managed, responsibly governed, and responsive organization; and 3) promoting the growth of a society that embraces full inclusion of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (AAMR.ORG). The site is well organized and arranged with various segments such as principle and diversity that underscore how persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities should be handled.

One thing that stood out is that the site has the most vital domains, such as assessments, announcements, and opportunities segments. These three segments offer the necessary guidance and essential information on assessing and making announcements and highlighting various educational opportunities for persons with intellectual and developmental exceptionalities. Some of the assessments displayed here are the diagnostic Adaptive Behavior Scale (DABS) and Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) (AAMR.ORG).

Furthermore, the site is more educative and offers basic courses for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Most importantly, I loved that the site has various AAIDD publications that teach and provide vital information on how to help and interact with persons with disabilities. For example, there is a publication, “Teaching Authentic Cooking Skills to Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.” The site also offers online education for persons with developmental disabilities, where they can register with webinars. The site also has a YouTube channel that is open to everybody so that they can learn more about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (AAMR.ORG). Finally, the site is good because of the varied pictures it uses to represent various information. Remarkably, there is also a donation segment where people across the globe can donate. The site also has an area for becoming an AAIDD member, which is encouraging.
