In many Western cultures, direct verbal communication is valued, with individuals expressing their thoughts and concerns openly. However, indirect communication is more common in cultures such as Japan, where individuals may use subtle cues or silence to convey messages. For example, a patient from a Western culture might explicitly state their symptoms. In contrast, a patient from an Eastern culture might express discomfort through nonverbal cues like avoiding eye contact or speaking softly.
There are cultural differences in nonverbal communication as well, such as body language and facial emotions. Keeping eye contact might be seen as disrespectful or combative in certain cultures, but it can also be seen as a sign of attention and respect in others. Similarly, gestures and physical touch have different meanings in different cultures. For instance, a handshake may be a standard greeting in Western cultures, but in some Asian cultures, a bow or a slight nod is preferred.

To ensure effective communication and assess understanding, healthcare professionals can employ various strategies. Firstly, they can use active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing and summarizing, to confirm their knowledge of the patient’s concerns. Additionally, using plain language and avoiding medical jargon can help bridge language and cultural barriers (Rehman and Sohail 9). Additionally, using multilingual employees or interpreting services can help in communicating with patients who don’t speak the primary language well.
Finally, healthcare providers can use teach-back or show-me techniques to confirm patient understanding. This involves asking patients to explain in their own words the information provided or demonstrating a skill, such as administering medication (Rehman and Sohail 13). By assessing patients’ comprehension and addressing misunderstandings, healthcare professionals can promote culturally competent care and improve health outcomes across diverse populations.
