Validity and Reliability

Validity and Reliability

The selected article for this discussion is titled “Looked after and adopted children: applying the latest science to complex biopsychosocial formulations”, authored by Pinto, C. and published in 2019. My project topic is adoption and how genetic and environmental factors impact academic achievement in adopted children. Notably, the article detailed a 15-year-old boy, Lucas, a case study whose serious issues were long acknowledged and labeled as emotional problems. Despite the benefits of the case study approach, questions exist about its validity and reliability. From the article, the history of Lucas’ case study is one threat to internal validity. History threatens internal validity because many events other than Lucas’ adoption occurred during the case study assessment and may be to blame for the various behavior problems Lucas manifested daily. Apart from the non-evidenced therapy Lucas received for many years, his adoption, developmental stage, academic performance, and social life may have all played a role in the variations in results (Pinto, 2019). The greater the likelihood that history will pose a threat, the longer the interval between his birth, adoption, and developmental stages.

Events with historical repercussions are frequently unanticipated, making planning for them highly challenging. It can be challenging to lessen an event’s threat to internal validity even after it occurs (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2012). In this article, history as an internal threat could be improved by limiting and contrasting the fewer variables by ensuring that only pertinent data is assessed in a case study. Ideal research would examine one result at a time while analyzing a detailed case study. For example, in this article, the researcher could have evaluated a few variables in the Lucas study case study instead of comparing several variables. Moreover, he could follow a specific procedure when addressing the case study to avoid changing historical effects for a more straightforward discussion of the case study.
