Using the Walden Library

A review of evidence-based literature is very important in nursing practice, especially in this era where evidence-based practice is advocated for. The literature can either be journals or peer-reviewed articles with topics relevant to an individual’s field or practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2022). Several databases can be used to search for the literature, including the Walden Library, Google Scholar, WebMed, and the Up to Date website. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relevance of the article selected, the process used when searching for the article, and any issues that surround the search process.

For this assignment, the article I selected is “Dear Mental Health Practitioners, Take Care of Yourselves: Literature Review on Self-Care,” authored by Posluns & Gall and published in the year 2020. The article talks about the importance of self-care among mental health practitioners and the self-care strategies that can be employed. It is important to note that mental health practitioners provide a one-wake service involving acts of compassion and empathy without expecting much back. For this reason, mental health practitioners are drained and are at risk of developing mental health disorders due to stress and burnout that result from the nature of their work (Posluns & Gall, 2020). The self-care strategies highlighted in the article include social support, risk awareness, physical health care, spirituality, and flexibility.

The process of searching the article was not cumbersome as there were a variety of articles to choose from. I used the Walden Library database and searched for “Self-care strategies for mental health practitioners.” For the year of publishing, I searched for articles published between 2019 and 2023, as I wanted current literature that was not more than five years old. There were several options provided, and I selected the above article, which is a peer-reviewed article, as the contents were directly related to what I was searching for. This process is important as it helps one identify an authentic article. Several factors should be considered while searching for literature, and these include accuracy, authenticity, currency, and (Jandric, 2021)). All these factors were considered while selecting the article.

Fortunately, the search process, as aforementioned, was very smooth. There were no challenges faced while searching for the article in the Walden Library. Additionally, several options for articles on the subject I desired were provided, contrary to other databases. Notably, Walden Library has a variety of journals and articles that can be accessed and applied in practice. Following this, I would recommend Walden Library for scholarly articles and journals to my colleagues. To begin with, the database is very effective and simple to use when searching for a specific topic. Secondly, the database has a variety of literature that one can access and fetch the information required. Lastly, the articles provided are authentic, accurate, current, and relevant for each field of expertise (Tolk, 2012). For instance, the article I selected had authors named proving authenticity. The article was also published in the year 2020, and therefore, the information provided is current and can be utilized in evidence-based practice.

In conclusion, access to evidence-based research articles and journals is very salient in the nursing practice. The article of discussion in this assignment was “Dear Mental Health Practitioners, Take Care of yourselves: Literature Review on Self-Care.” The article was relevant to the topic of the search, which was ‘self-care strategies for mental health practitioners.’ Furthermore, the article met all the qualities of a scholarly article, including authenticity, accuracy, and currency. The database I used was Walden Library, and access was smooth, and I faced no challenges. Therefore, it is a very effective database to recommend to others.
