Using Layers in Adobe PhotoShop
Layers are similar to transparent pieces of glass stacked on each other, with each stack allowing the distinct parts of the glass below to show. There are two main categories of layers available in Photoshop, namely content layers and adjustment layers. Content layers present different types of content, such as text, shapes, and pictures. On the other hand, adjustment layers allow the adjustments of various parameters of the layer below, such as brightness, contrast, and hue, among others (“Photoshop Basics: Understanding Layers”, n.d.). Layers are very valuable in editing as they add a lot of flexibility and control to editing. Each layer can be manipulated independently from the rest of the image, allowing an editor to only apply the desired effects without altering the whole image. Additionally, layers allow an editor to be more creative in their work. For instance, we can add features such as flowers, mountains, and colors that were not available in the original image.
How did you manipulate or copy layers in Photoshop
I found the adjustment layers the most interesting and easy to use as they produced significant changes to any image. The brightness/contrast layer allowed the brightness and the contrast of the image to be adjusted to the desired values. Need help with your assignment ? Get in touch with us.
On the other hand, the exposure adjustment layer allowed the manipulation of various aspects, such as exposure, offset, and gamma correction. Additionally, the option to turn a certain layer on and off was very helpful as it allowed the reviewing of an image with or without the layer in question.
Lastly, the duplicate layer option was another helpful aspect, as it allowed the transfer of one layer to another image automatically. To duplicate a layer to another image, right-click the layer icon on the extreme right bottom corner of the screen and select the “duplicate layer”.
In the duplicate layer dialog box, name the layer and select the image you would like the layer duplicated to.
