Using a Variety of Assessment Measures when Evaluating Student Learning

Using a Variety of Assessment Measures when Evaluating Student Learning

Assessment is the process of collecting, evaluating, and using the information to help the teacher make decisions that improve learners’ education. Therefore, assessment is a fundamental part of teaching because it determines whether the educational goals or objectives are met. Assessment affects decisions about placements, grades, curriculum, advancements, instructional wants, and funding. It also inspires instructors to ask themselves complex questions about their instruction, like: are we teaching what we should teach, among others? Therefore, why should teachers use different assessment measures when evaluating student learning?

First, teachers should use various assessment measures to meet each learner’s multiple needs (Burden, Paul, and David 287). This is because, in a class, there are different types of learners with diverse needs. There are special needs learners whose needs would be completely different from those without. As such, assessments must be designed to match their needs. Therefore, teachers should adapt assessments by making changes or accommodations in summative and formative assessments for special needs learners. Secondly, using different assessment measures provides a teacher with a clear picture of students’ learning and understanding as the teacher teaches. This will allow the teacher to adjust everything from classroom management strategies to lesson plans. For instance, as I teach, I randomly ask learners questions about what we have learned.

Thirdly, using different assessment measures helps the teacher actively involve the learner in learning while also identifying their strengths and weaknesses. For example, one time asked my learners to make a box as an assessment. One of my special needs learners in class made the best box, and he was so happy. As a teacher, I was so impressed because I discovered the strength and skills of the learner through the assessment. Besides, Burden, Paul, and David point out that teachers can use product assessments instead of paper-pencil tests, where learners can be asked to prepare a product reflecting their learning (289). Subsequently, this will help determine each learner’s strengths and skills.
