US History
US Industrial and Progressive Era
A notable issue depicted in American Yawp Chapter 18 is urban migration as people went to seek manufacturing jobs. The industrial and progressive era was characterized by the growth of the manufacturing sector. More people were required to go and work in factories and other establishments. Following the migration, the US would later emerge as the country with the largest cities in the world. By 1920, most American citizens lived in urban areas, as shown in section III of Chapter 18, ‘Immigration and Urbanization’ in the American Yawp (Locke & Wright, 2019, p. 62). The urbanization issue is significant, given its contribution to the entry of foreign immigrants into the country. The US lacked sufficient internal labor force to fulfill the demands of its manufacturing sector. Therefore, there was a need to admit foreign immigrants to fill the gap. About 25 million foreign immigrants migrated to the US from the onset of the industrialization era to about 1920, as indicated in Chapter 18 Section III, ‘Immigration and Urbanization’ in the American Yawp (Locke & Wright, 2019, p. 62). Admission of foreign immigrants has since made the US one of the most diverse countries worldwide.
Imperialism
The cartoon image is against imperialism. Imperialism occurs when a country interferes with the sovereignty of other nations by extending its power through diplomacy or military force. As depicted in the image, the US has extended its imperialism to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the Philippines, and Cuba (Keppler & Schwarzmann, n.d.). By showing that the countries represented by the cartoon seated in the front row are sad, it signifies that they are not happy with the US’s imperialism. The author further cements the anti-imperialist sentiment by portraying a cartoon labeled Africa cleaning windows on the sidelines (Keppler & Schwarzmann, n.d.). The depiction implies that the US has leveraged its diplomatic influence and economic power to exploit the African continent. The cartoon shows how the US has, for the longest time, forcefully influenced decisions that adversely impact citizens in ‘small’ nations.
