Rowntree et al.’s text, Globalization and Diversity: Geography of a Changing World, delves into globalization and diversity and its relationship with geography (8). The text avers that the world is increasingly becoming interconnected like never before. Although globalization still existed during the European revolution, planetary integration has become more robust. Such globalization impacts several areas of commerce, communications, and travel. Rowntree et al. note that although economics is the primary driver of globalization, it impacts other areas, including land and culture (8). Notably, financial decisions made in one part of the world have overwhelming ramifications on local systems, sustainability, and people’s lives. For instance, mining gold in the Peruvian Amazon benefits corporations and miners financially (Rowntree et al. 8). However, such activities cause severe setbacks to ecosystems and indigenous communities.

Globalization also has severe ramifications on the environment. Due to the increasing economic activities, firms establish subsidiaries in foreign lands to exploit growth opportunities (Rowntree et al. 9). Subsequently, resources once considered a preserve of the local community turn into global commodities. Such actions have led to serious scarcity problems. Further, globalization has aggravated environmental issues such as deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution. Yet again, global cooperation has come in handy to address these issues.

Moreover, globalization may be viewed from the lens of its impacts on humans. For instance, social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter have influenced people’s culture (Rowntree et al. 9). Sometimes, content posted on these platforms conflicts with local customs, thus causing a divergence from people’s original cultural alignment. Also, globalization directly affects people’s well-being. For instance, the emergence of fast-food restaurants has caused a shift from traditional local diets. Subsequently, fast foods have caused serious health concerns. Such foods are welcome in their countries of origin due to familiarity.
