Universal Health Care in the United States

The debate on whether the United States should adopt a universal healthcare system like those in Europe and Canada has been ongoing for decades. I believe that the U.S. would benefit significantly from adopting universal healthcare coverage. Countries with universal health care systems, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, have lower overall health costs and better health indicators, including life expectancy from birth and mortality rates of children under five (Galvani et al. 524). Universal health coverage could eliminate disparities in access to healthcare, ensuring that no American has to forgo medical care due to high costs. Furthermore, the burden of inadequate insurance coverage would be reduced, as individuals would not have to rely on expensive private insurance or worry about surprise medical bills.

However, opponents of universal health care argue that such a system could lead to longer wait times for services and higher taxes to fund it. These concerns are valid; for instance, in Canada, patients may have to wait weeks or months for elective surgeries (Zieff et al. 2). However, these delays typically apply to non-emergency procedures. Moreover, the potential savings from reduced administrative costs and increased preventive care could offset some of the financial concerns. Additionally, by implementing technology and optimizing patient care pathways, the U.S. can reduce wait times while ensuring equitable access. A carefully designed universal healthcare system in the U.S. could prioritize critical care and manage resources to avoid the inefficiencies seen in other countries.

In general, the United States should offer efficient and affordable primary healthcare for all its population, which would improve the health of the inhabitants and give them the same rights to receive treatments. While the issue of cost and the time it will take to acquire the product is always an issue of contention, there is always a way of finding a way around this. Moreover, access to universal health care would decrease general expenses within the health services and for everyone in particular, when the major concentration is put on early health treatment, as well as eliminating various bureaucratic procedures. Free and affordable health care could be the way to fix the situation and offer all those Americans a treat they never knew existed.
